Chairman Thompson Statement on the Biden Administration’s DHS Budget Request

(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the following statement on the Biden Administration’s fiscal year 2022 discretionary funding request for the Department of Homeland Security:

“Though the Biden Administration’s first budget request may not give a full picture of the forthcoming DHS request, it does reflect President Biden’s willingness to confront urgent homeland security challenges like domestic terrorism and climate change that were all but ignored by the Trump Administration. Importantly, it also includes funding to revitalize Department programs that were largely neglected by the former President such as refugee and asylum processing and State and local programs.

“The budget request also reflects the Biden Administration’s commitment to improve cybersecurity, invest in researching and developing modern technologies, and better incorporate civil rights and civil liberties principals into everything the Department does.

“I look forward to working with the Biden Administration to refine and implement these proposals.”
